DR. S. E. WINN. Doctor Winn was the mining company surgeon and physician from April 1878 to 1889. He was paid $350.00 per month through the Miners' Fund, which itself was funded by $1.00 monthly payments by the mine workers. Dr. Winn replaced Dr. A. R. Randol, who left in 1878. During his tenure he recorded 80,000 visits, either to his office or to the miners' homes. He reported seven fatal accidents and nine cases of salivation during this period. On Reverse: Dr. S. E. In Englishtown, the company provided an office, dispensary and house free of expense. During his ten years of service, Dr. Winn traveled the rough terrain night or day with horse and buggy or on horseback, averaging 5,000 calls a year. His interest in photography resulted in many fine pictures depicting the scenes of New Almaden that today are but a legend. |
