ALDEN, Fernando - New York surveyor, worked on Erie Canal. Arrived at NA 5/5/47 with Robert Walkinshaw - there til 1851. ALVARADO, Juan Bautista (1809-82) - b. Monterey. Gov., Dept of California; granted land to Berryessa and to Larios, 1842. ARNOT, N.D. - superintendent, NA 11/1/63-4/15/65 BAILEY, Edgar H. - author of Div. of Mines Special Report #17 (1952). BARRON, Eustace - Barron, Forbes & Co. partner; bought out A. Forbes prior to latter's exit to England. BARRON, E. W. - Barron, Forbes partner; shortly after 1855 he took over the cotton mills in Tepic. BATES, Edward - US Atty.-Gen. (1861-64) in US v: Castillero. BEE, Henry (1808- ) b. England; to Calif. 1830; m. 1838 (?); wife died1853; one child. J. A. Forbes gave him a contract to build four adobe retorts and an hacienda at the furnace site, summer 1846. BELDON, Josiah - joined the Fossat claim mining company with Larkin. Granted Barranca Colorado, Tehama Co. by Micheltorena 1843. BELL, Thomas (-1892) - confidential agent for Bolton, Barron SF - independent sales representative who began with firm in Tepic, 1848. (See: Mammy Pleasant's Partner) BENHAM, Calhoun - US attorney US v. Castillero. BENJAMIN, Judah P. (1811-84) - famous US attorney and speculator; defended Jefferson Davis after serving in several Confederate cabinet posts; counsel to Ca. Land Commission; authority on Mexican land grants; Washington DC attorney for NAMCo (US v. Castillero) for which he received $35,000. BERNAL, Augustin, Juan, Marie and Pilar - cograntees of El Valle de San Jose, Alameda Co. with Antonio Maria Sunol, 1840. BERRYESSA, Jose Reyes (1787-1846) - owner of Rancho San Vicente. Killed in Bear Flag Revolt by one of Fremont's men under Carson. J. A. Forbes connived to get this property and failed. Was later confirmed to Guadalupe Mining Co. as 1,109 acres. BILLINGS, Frederick. - Vermont lawyer; to Calif, 1849; acquired wealth and power. President No. Pac. RR.; named Berkeley; high SF society. Harassed by Randolph in Kittleman v. Cunnington, Billings had posthumous congressional award to Randolph cut to $12,000 for spite. Partner, Halleck, Peachy and Billings; went to Mexico 1859 for evidence in Castillero case - with Wm. Barron at latter's death. BIRNIE, Robert - one-time mine employee, obtained fraudulent evidence for US District Court proceedings. Associate of J. A. Forbes. BLACK, Jeremiah Sullivan (1810-83) - b. Pa.; Atty.-Gen. under Buchanan; Pa. chief justice; 1858 to Calif. as special govt. counsel on Mexican land grant cases; involved in all phases of NA case. US Secy. of State 1860-1. Dock warehouse to 1878; engaged by J B Randol. To NA Sept. 1878; witnessed signing of JBR's contract 1879. 1892, at Randol's retirement, became Gen. Agt. in Ca. for QMC. "Forced" retirement (by T. Arizona Mng. Co.??; affiliated with QMC from 1861; became Gen. Mgr. 7/1/64 and remained until April 1870 when his nephew, J. B. Randol took over. One of first UC regents; Golden Gate Pk. officer; died 5/5/75 leaving a $7 million estate. CARLISLE, John Griffin (1835-1910) - American lawyer b. Ky.; USHR 1877-90; Spkr. 1883-9; USS 1890-93; US Secy. Treasury 1893-97. CARSON, Ellard W. and Pattie - NA surveyor March 1900-Jan. 1903 CARSON, George - b. 1850; to NA 1883; telegraph operator; company clerk; postmaster. CASTILLERO, Andres -"discoverer" of New Almaden mine. ed. Mexico City School of Mires; Capt. in Mex. army; first to Calif. 1834; to Mexico as congressman from Ca. 1841; found gold near Sta. Barbara; En route to Sutter's Fort on diplomatic mission, rediscovered the mine at New Almaden and correctly identified its mineral deposit. Owned mine until US-Mexican conflict intervened. Nothing more heard of him after 1861. CASTRO, Jose - son of Jose Tiburcio Castro; this Mexican general was a partner with Castillero in the mine for some time; former governor of Yerba Buena. CATRON, John (1786?-1865) - b. Pa.; to Tenn. 1812; Tenn. lawyer and justice; US SC assoc. Justice 1837, staunch unionist. CHABOLLA/CHABOYA, Luis - partner of Antonio Sunol; 1824 erected mill to Los Capitancillos. Several unsuccessful attempts to remove gold from mine. CHABOLLA, Pedro - Alcalde of Pueblo San Jose; took Castillero's denouncement on 11/22/45. CHARD, William G. - from Columbia Co., NY; to Ca. with Isaac Graham; arrested and sent to Mexico; returned and married into Robles family; worked on preliminary reduction under Castillero until August 1846. Granted Rancho de las Flores, Tehama Co., 1844. CHRISTY, Samuel B. - b. 1854; geologist visited NA first in 1875 and continued to bring through mining pupils; author of monograph on NA. Recommend J . Storekeeper with Ralph Lowe til Aug. 1909. Resigned from Eureka Co. Bd. 4/16/1900 and Bd. of Dir. Standard (Mirabel) Mine. DREW, Daniel - President of QMC and notorious Wall St. gambler. ELDREDGE, James - supt. of NA under SFB; later joined Laurencel in Fossat claim; they paid J A Forbes $20,000 for forged evidence in July 1858. Earlier, company agt. in California. Retired 4/4/64 to be replaced by Sherman Day. FELTON, Charles N. - Republican Party candidate in 11/86 vs. Frank Sullivan for 5th Conger. Dist. SEE Sullivan -- Contested Election. FIEDLER, Ferdinand - furnace foreman, NA; brother-in-law of Bohlman; traveled with JBR to various Ca. reduction plants. SFB called him and "old fogy" (5/13/70). FOOTE, Arthur DeWint and Mary Hallock - Arthur Foote was an engineer at NA; his wife a well-known illustrator for Harpers. He worked on the Sutro Tunnel and with SoPac on Tehachapi Pass and surveyed at NA as well. (SEE RELATED COLLECTION ON MHF) FORBES, Alexander (-) - British consul in Tepic, Mexico. Senior partner in Barron Forbes. Winter 1846-7 he purchased shares in the Santa Clara Mine from Castillero and Don Jose Castro. Sent James Forbes as custodian. Then Robert Walkinshaw and Fernando Alden sent. November 1847 he went to NA himself with money and a crew of miners and equipment. (10-1-47 arrived on William which was seized by the American authorities and taken to Monterey prize court where Forbes then 72, bought the ship and continued to New Almaden.) Made John Young superintendent. Renamed the mine Nuevo Almaden. After signing of Guadalupe-Hidalgo (2-2-48) he returned to NA with Thomas Bell as his confidential agent. In the face of Berryessa and Fossat claims, he concentrated on Berryessa as the weaker of the two parties. Brought Lyman in for survey. Dr. Tobin brought from England. Hired Halleck, Billings and Peachy (1850). Halleck came to manage mine, replacing J A Forbes, and also represented the company in several court cases. Alexander Forbes finally sold his interest in the mine to Eustace Barron. FORBES,. James Alexander (1804?-1881) - b. Inverness, Scotland; family died and he was raised by an uncle in Cadiz, Spain. Attended the Univ. of Salamanca. Shipped from there to Vancouver, but shipwrecked of the Galapagos Is.; John Young, Capt. of the Fanny, rescued them and they continued to Vancouver in 1829. Joined the Hudson Bay Trading Co. and moved an office to SF. (Wm. Rae, predecessor, committed suicide - his asst. was Robert Birnie who came to Monterey in 1841.) Opened port at Alviso; became Catholic; naturalized 1833; m. Ana Maria Galindo 1834 (9 sons; 3 dtrs.); was majordomo of Sta. Clara mission and eventually donated land for the campus to Fr. Nobili. Justice of Peace SJ; handled title searches; Vice-Consul for Britain in Ca. 1842-50, Monterey. In charge of mine from Sept. 1849-May 1850. 1-30-46 reported to BF on the Castillero claim -- purchased small interest from Fr. Real and took over mgmt. for the latter. 9/47 Walkinshaw to mine; 3/49 JAF visits AF in Mexico and gets power of atty. May 5, 1850 replaced by Henry Halleck. BF refused to reimburse him for services rendered ($18,000+); built flour mill which then failed; bankruptcy 1856. Sold remaining interests to Barron. Died 5/6/81. FORBES, William - member Barron Forbes and Co. Died in Mexico 4/24/59 . in company of F. Billings (2/3-4/59). FOSSAT, Charles - Frenchman who joined with Laurencel in obtaining the Larios property and suing for possession of the mine. US v. Fossat .eventually became the QMC claim and triumphed in 1864. FREMONT, John Charles (1813-90) - American explorer and army officer 'The Pathfinder'. b. Savannah, Ga.; Dec. 1845 reached California; played prominent role in conquering the state during the Mexican war; appointed RF Stockton civil governor of Ca.; became involved in Stockton-Kearny quarrel which led to his court-martial 1848; various political and commercial exploits thereafter. Visited NA in the 1840s. GRIER, Robert Cooper (1794-1870) - Supreme Court Justice 1846-70. HALL, J. Underwood - doctor at NA Sept. 1889-s summer 1894. There was some concern over his youthful, single state. His brother, Leon, some clerical and apothecary work ca. 7/90. (RRB to JBR 12/31/89) HALLECK, Henry Wager (1819?-1872) - b. Oneida; grad. West Pt. 1839; . official engr. 1854 after having served as Ca. Secy. of State under Kearny and Mason (1847-9); 1854-61 served both as an officer of BF and as a partner in Halleck, Peachy and Billings. Military commander throughout Civil War -- Chief or Staff to Lincoln. Married Alexr. Hamilton's granddtr. 1855; she was a great favorite of Wm. Barron, Thomas Bell and Bolton. Halleck died in January 1872. HARROWER, James - Chief engr. NA HARRY, James "Capt." - b.7/29/34 in Cornwall; youthful miner; Methodist; arrived at NA 1871; became sr. mine foreman; replaced Von Leicht in 1890. Died 1895. "Old Prophet". Columbia and Dane School of Law, Harvard; arrived Ca. May 1850; took Benjamin-Currey . US Dist. Ct. post at 29 through help of Daniel Webster (1851). HOPKINS, F. V. - second resident doctor NA after A. R. Randol. HUTTNER, H. J. - hired by JBR to build furnace similar to that of Idria, Austria. JANIN, Henry - mining engr. Enriquita 1861; consulting engr. NA 1867-70. Younger brother of Louis. JANIN, Louis - (1836-1914) b. New Orleans (father prominent lawyer); completed soph. year Yale 1856; toured Europe; studied mining engrg. at Freiburg for three years and at the Ecole des Mines at Paris. Returned to America 1861; briefly supt. Enriquita Mine; to Comstock to be Supt. of Gould and Curry Co. 1864; mgr. mines in Mexico; one year with Japanese govt.; consulting engr. SF; resided Gaviota, Ca. last 20 years. Started Herbert Hoover in his mining career. JENNINGS, Hennen - four years schooling in England; Harvard grad 1877; asst. surveyor under Ross Browne - 11/87; supt. 1883-7; m. Edith Coleman of Nevada City 1886; to Bloomfield after NA; thence to E1 Callao Gold Mind:-Co. in Venezuela; thence to South Africa. His brother, Sidney, and his wife took part in plays at NA while there. JOHNSON, Reverdy (1796-1876) - American jurist and diplomat; Dred Scott case lawyer; US Atty. Replaced Mayo. LINCOLN, Abraham - President US; signed eviction order which brought threat of civil war to NA and rescinded it. France ; Pioche, Nev. named for him; bon vivant; imported French wines to Ca. 1849; formed Pioche Bayerque SF; returned from 1851 trip to France with huge capital which he wisely invested; SJ, SF rr; real estate SF, etc.; left NA (Casa Grande) 1862; lived in SF; committed suicide 5/2/16. PITTS, Henry - joined in Fossat claim mining company with T. Larkin. PRUYN, John -President QMC; lawyer and RR director; state senator NY 1861; USHR 1863-65, 1867-9; chancellor of Univ. of NY 1868-77. RAND, C. W. - sheriff in San Jose RANDOL, A.R. "Col." - first resident doctor NA; brother of JBR d. 1879 at NA. RANDOL, James Butterworth - b. 1817; secy. QMC from 3/19/63 until April 1870; nephew of SF Butterworth; director of San Lorenzo Flume and Transportation Co. (Felton RR, 1874); wife had nervous breakdown; 6 children. Retired 1892. RANDOLPH, Edmund - (1819-1861) - American attorney; classmate of A. Peachy and grandson of the framer of the Constitution; to Ca. 1849; member of the legislature "of a thousand drinks"; affiliated with William Walker's Nicaraguan filibuster; US attorney in US vs. Castillero until his death in 1861. He received only $5,000 for his services while alive, although his widow was granted $12,000 after Billings did his best to block the Congressional payment. Friend of A. P. Crittenden. READE, Frank - surveyor NA 6/82-5/86. Arrived at same time as Von Leicht. REAL, Fr. Jose Maria - friend and business associate of Castillero; in charge of mine from April 1846 to September 1849. RICORD, John - joined Fossat claim mining company with T. Larkin. ROBLES, Secundino and Teodorio - partners o` Castillero in mine; former was born ca. 1811 in Sta. Cruz; m. 1830. They received $13,000 cash for the mine plus an interest which they traded in 1847 to J. Pena for his rancho. (R. Rincon de San Francisquito); built large adobe for wife and four children. He died in 1890 after siring 24 children more! ROCKWELL, John - Us attorney for Castillero-NAMCo. ; author of A Compilation of Spanish and Mexican Law. ROMAN, Richard - Berryessa heirs, Roman, Stuart, Hepburn and Thorne joined in 1852 to claim mine. SCHNEIDER, James "PS" - owner and operator of the mine in the 1960s. SCOTT, Robert - b. 1841 Canada; worked with Huttner on furnaces 1871. SEXTON, George H. - purchased NA in 1914 and worked with Landers until 1926. SCHUETTE, C. N. - manager of NA for NA Corp. in 1940s. SNYDER, J. R. - joined in Fossat claim mining company with Larkin. STANTON, Edwin McMasters (1814-1869) - American politician and jurist; special counsel for government on Mexican land cases, he was convinced that most claims were fraudulent -- including NAMCo.'s. Represented US in District Court and Castillero - then switched allegiance to Fossat and won. ($25,000 for Castillero) STUART, Charles - joined Fossat claim mining company with Larkin. SULLIVAN, Frank J. - Democrat opponent of Charles N. Felton in vote scandal involving NA 1887. Son-in-law of James Phelan. SUNOL, Antonio - with Luis Chabolla erected mill in valley 1824. Cabecera of the Partido (Pueblo SJ) sub-prefect 1841-44. Died March 1865 at age 68. SWAYNE, Noah H. - Supreme Court justice 1862-81. SWETT, Leonard - lawyer who practiced same circuit as Lincoln in Ill. As Lincoln's personal advisor, he instigated the "invasion" of the mine during the Civil far (see Shutes) and according to Stedman Swett and Lamar (Dem. Ca.) made a great deal of money from NA stock immediately after former's return from Ca. though Bates contradicts this. Died in disgrace. TANEY, Roger B. (1777-1864) Supreme Court justice; US vs Castillero. THORNE, W. S. - doctor who visited and worked at NA several times and testified in Felton v. Sullivan. TOBIN, ? Dr. - Barron Forbes brought him from England to appraise and improve upon machinery at the mine. He later joined the opposition. TREFREN, J. L. - Methodist minister, NA VARCOE, James - b. 1837, Cornwall; to NA 1867; mined at Lake Superior, Grass Valley; shift boss under Harry. VON LEICHT, F. "Col." - Austrian mech. engr. with French wife; from Mother Lode country to replace Jennings in 1887. WALKER, Robert J. (1801-1869) - US Secretary of the Treasury; speculated in California quicksilver. WALKINSHAW, Robert - b. Scotland; to Mexico and thence to California (NA) May 1847 to manage the mine. Returned to Scotland in 1858. WAYNE, James Moore (1790?-1867) - Supreme Court assoc. justice; dissentor in Castillero. WIGGINS, William Dr. - b. NY, to Oregon 1839; to Ca. 1840; active under Alvarado and Graham's riflemen; overland 1846 and returned 1847. One -time owner of Fossat claim. (See: Cook). WINN, S. E.
