This record contains an envelope of newspaper clippings saved by Irene Hauck. They are part of an unfinished scrapbook album of articles related to life in New Almaden. Mostly from 1880s through 1890s. Image #1 - Manila envelope listing contents. Image #2 - "The Cave of the Forty Thieves" - an editorial article about the California State Assembly and Assemblyman Elwood Bruner, who had been accused of bribery in 1891. Image #3 - "Gone Back to Germany - E. W. Lesser Finds Profit in Quicksilver, Which His Employer Lost" - The long time bookkeeper of J. B. Randol was found to be short $17-$18k and allowed to return to his home country. Image #4-5 - "Baros' Defense, Claims Yturriaga Was A Bad Man. Defendant's Story on the Stand" - Describes the court case of Jose Baros who was charged with the murder of Joaquin Yturriaga. Back of newspaper article has January 23, 189? on it. Image #6 - "Mr. Randol's Management" - Summary of financial statements under Mr. Randol. A newspaper article dated January 22, 1891. Image #7 - "Baros on Trial, Testimony in the New Almaden Murder, Defendant's Family Present" - More information on the court case of Jose Baros who was charged with the murder of Joaquin Yturriaga. Image #8 - "Cinnabar Lodge, Knights of Pythias Installation at Almaden" - (Knights of Pythias is a fraternal order established in 1864.) San Jose Daily Mercury, Feb 4, 1996. Images #9-10 - Santa Clara County Election Returns, November 6, 1896, San Jose Daily Mercury. Images #11-12 - Santa Clara County Election Returns, November 24, 1898, San Jose Daily Mercury. Images #13 - "In Far-Away Africa, Notes of an Anaconda Gentleman's Experience on the Voyage from England to Africa's Shores", by Sidney J. Jennings (possibly had been a surveyor at New Almaden). From a Montana newspaper clipping. Images #14-15 - "Heroes Honored" - Appears to be the text of a commemorative speech given by H. V. Morehouse. Image #16 - "Prayer to Cleveland, Humerous Production of a Delegate to a Democratic Convention" - In pencil is written "Ines named Ruth after Cleveland's daughter Florence Ruth Starkel Hauck". Image #17 - "An Overdose, Dr. T. O. Pendleton Takes Morphine and Atropia. He Wishes to Allay Neuralgia Pains - Uriah Wood's Horse and Phaeton Taken by the Doctor". Accidental overdose resulted in the doctor taking Mr. Wood's property. Image #18 - "A Quicksilver Exhibit, Valuable Contribution to the World's Fair at Almaden". Bulmore and Harry contributed a model of the mine, pieces of cinnabar before and after roasting, a flask of quicksilver, photographs and a brief history of the mine from 1850 to 1892. Image #19 - a social announcement saying that Mr. and Mrs. C. F. O'Brion of New Almaden were in town on business. References a tariff bill that would have killed the quicksilver business had it passed as originally written. Image #20 - "Col. Randol's Funeral". Article describes the funeral of Colonel Alanson M. Randol, the brother of J. B. Randol of the Almaden Mine, who was buried with military honors at the San Francisco Presidio. Image #21 - "An Able Officer Gone". Article memorializes Colonel Alanson M. Randol, the brother of J. B. Randol. Image #22 - "Cookery for Workingmens' Wives". Refers to a 50-page pamphlet containing "common sense ideas and simple recipes", collected under the direction of J. B. Randol for the benefit of the Helping Hand Club. Images #23-24 - Typewritten draft copy of document showing the Quicksilver Mining Company granting a right-of-way to the South Pacific Railroad Company for $5313.62. Dated May 28, 1886. |
