Palo Alto Times, Weekend Supplement - Peninsula Living - Saturday, June 25-26, 1966 Cover: California Quicksilver; Mining at New Almaden (Cover story written by Jim Gallagher. Photos by Al Lowry). "Al Lowry took a position just inside the entrance of the San Cristobal shaft at New Almaden to snap this picture of quicksilver miners preparing to follow their ore cars into the mountain for an afternoon of mucking cinnabar. The Santa Clara Valley flatlands stretch out in the distance. Once thousands of people swarmed the quicksilver grounds at New Almaden. There were schools, churches, stores and homes. Today only a handful of miners remain. But mercury is still a fascinating business. Our cover story beginning on Page 7 tells why." Table of Contents Red Rock with a Golden Gas - Pages 7-10, 39 and 40. "First you muck the cinnabar from deep within the Franciscan strata, or gouge it with a bulldozer from an open pit. Then you roast it at incredible temperatures to liberate the vapors, and cool them to collect a clear liquid which you pour into a 76 pound flask. After that, if you catch the market at a propitious instant, you can tell your friends you made it big in mercury." Century of Mining Under a Single Roof - Pages 12 and 13.
