| Description | A history of John Martin, a former mine official, written by Daniel and Douglas Martin, who were visitors to the N A Quicksilver Museum in 1999. TITLE: The Martin Family Daniel was born in 1952. Daniel is the Great Grandson of John Martin, who is listed among the Mine's Officers. John Martin came over from Cornwall with the water pump which the Mine bought to install in the mines here in New Almaden. He was the pump master for the New Almaden Mine. John's son William Martin married Trinidad Lopez, the great great-granddaughter of Martina Castro, (Santa Cruz wealthy landowner). She had a huge land grant as a result of being the daughter of Pablo Castro, who was part of an original expedition into the area. Her land spread from Santa Cruz to the foothills. William and Trinidad had 5 children. She divorced him because she said he rode his horse into the house, right up to the kitchen to get food. She was astounded. It was the straw that broke the camel's back. She then married someone else and had seven more children. In the photo, Angelina is really Angelica. Her name is misspelled. Lavinnia and Angelica and their family grew up in a small cottage in New Almaden. Cross reference: Quicksilver pg. 101 and Cinnabar Hills pg. 27. The photo is from 1880. William, his granddad wanted to be a Cowboy. His father, John was not pleased about that because he wanted him to be an English gentleman. |
