Description TITLE: Wells Fargo Display Here
A display of old Wells Fargo pictures, mail bags and cancelled letters sent to New Almaden and San Jose is creating interest in the window of Surety Savings & Loan Assn. on South First street. The display, arranged by Mrs. Gerry Wright Darling, is based on the theme, "Save by mail." Materials are from the New Almaden Museum.
Inside the entrance to the bank is an ornate gold mail box from the gold rush days in the Mother Lode. A painting in the window, painted from an old photograph, shows the old store in New Almaden which used to be the Wells Fargo office. All mail in the early days in the quicksilver mining community was carried by Wells Fargo.
